The last two decades have fundamentally changed our understanding of cat domestication, primarily due to advances in palaeogenetic methods. Analyses of archaeological and modern felids
have revealed the Near Eastern wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica) to be the common ancestor of all domestic cats.
